Best Practices for App Icons
- Use a simple, recognizable design that works at small sizes
- Start with a high-resolution square image (at least 1024x1024 pixels)
- For best results, use an image with transparency (PNG format)
- Avoid text in your app icon - it will be unreadable at smaller sizes
- Follow the platform design guidelines (iOS and Android have different icon styles)
- Test your icons on actual devices to ensure they look good
Frequently Asked Questions
For best results, upload a PNG image with transparency. This allows us to add padding and background colors as needed. However, JPG, GIF, and WEBP formats are also supported.
We recommend uploading a square image with at least 1024x1024 pixels. This ensures that all generated icons will have good quality, especially the larger ones like the iOS App Store icon (1024x1024) and the Google Play Store icon (512x512).
You only need to generate icons for the platforms you're developing for. If you're only creating an iOS app, you can uncheck the Android option, and vice versa. However, generating both sets doesn't add much to the package size, so it's often convenient to have them all available.
iOS and Android have different icon size requirements and design guidelines. iOS requires a 1024x1024 App Store icon and various sizes for different devices and contexts. Android requires icons for different screen densities (ldpi, mdpi, hdpi, etc.) and a 512x512 Play Store icon. Our tool generates all these sizes automatically from your single uploaded image.
